Review of Beautiful Boy (2011) by Brook Y — 02 Oct 2012
This is no "We Need To Talk About Kevin". That movie was well acting, disturbing an just plan f'd up. This movie was the perspective of the parents in the after math without seeing the crazy kid develop.
The acting is just ok and maybe that's because they are sing former TV actors. It was just ok. It probably shouldn't have come out as the same year as the film with Tilda Swinton that addresses the issue much better.
Plus the title doesn't make sense. At no point in the movie did I hear the mom say anything like "how could this have happened to our 'beautiful boy'". I'm not a huge fan of Maria Bello but she did a good job acting and didn't annoy me.
In fact she probably kept the movie grounded from turning into a bad Lifetime Television for Women movie. Even if this movie would have come out first I didn't think the acting or story was strong enough to keep the audience engaged regardless of if you have kids or not.
This movie was pretty weak. See "We Need To Talk About Kevin" - the acting is better and more ambiguous when it comes to the parents role in shaping the son for a true debate on nature v. Nuture.
