Review of Beau Travail (2000) by Private U — 25 Jun 2008
This methodically paced film carefully examines the day to day life of French Legionaries who are stationed within the desert. Director, Claire Denis? long shots of the gorgeous landscape and the film?s characters emphasize an exterior beauty that masks damaged souls.
There is an extreme concentration on the mundane and ritualistic tradition to emphasize the dehumanization of the military machine. The way in which envy and jealousy act as a vicious poison in this film is truly haunting and tragic.
Beau Travail is slow at times but patience is well rewarded by the last scene of the film(which is worth watching Beau Travail for alone).
