Review of Beau Travail (2000) by Cli O — 04 Nov 2008
Denis' most fully realized film. A stunning adaptation of Melville's Billy Budd removed from the sea and placed into a Legionairre outpost in Djibouti. Denis cleverly uses music and the human movement to stress the underlying elements of family and faith put to the test by jealousy.
Denis Lavant (Mauvais Sang, Le Amants Sur De Neuf) acts on a level rarely seen in modern film. I have not seen this screened in 8 years and last night it still hit me as it did then.
