Review of Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest (2011) by Jon B — 19 Jan 2012
I hesitate to call it a great documentary because, being a Tribe fan, it may come off as showing some sort of favoritism. But in all honesty, it is a very good chronicle of one of music's most revered and celebrated acts.
It would've been advantageous to concentrate on the music & the inspirations behind them, rather than focus on the turmoil within the group. But those events were undeniable and had to be included.
Overall, director Michael Rapaport does a decent job chronicling ATCQ. Some parts of the film, though, definitely reflect his love of Tribe, and that can be both good and bad. Regardless, it's a must see for any hip-hop fan & it's worth seeing for ?love's comment regarding the golden age of hip-hop.
