Review of Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest (2011) by Michaël H — 26 Feb 2012
More time shouldn't have been spent on how they wrote the RHYMES (although they talk a little about the beats and stuff), basically, how their music was made, what subjects they tackled... The Native Tongues period could also have been more developed and dug into, while the Phife/Q-Tip conflict was longly explained in a more tabloidish approach, which wasnt that necessary in my opinion. So it's a bit of a disappointment, as there was huge material to be exploited and their albums were merely evoked and not at all analyzed.
Great pictures though (namely live appearances, with Kanye and Mos Def for instance)... and of course great SOUNDS. But I wanted to hear more of em! Good documentary.
