Review of Beatriz at Dinner (2017) by Bob F — 15 Nov 2017
I'll say this, the acting is superb and the social issues are left quite ambiguous. Both main characters are extreme examples of a very important and interesting issues. For me that takes away my ability to enjoy the acting because the arguments/positions are presented in a way that each side looks at the opposite point point of view and they each seek an answer that can be good for humanity, and also allows the money seekers to reach their goals.
Both characters were unlikable to me. Hayek's character was much too depressing and miserable. Everything unfair in the world (and there really is a lot) keeps her in perpetual misery because she sees so little good.
Lithgow is so over the top evil that his character also seems too extreme. He doesn't just screw people over, he laughs about how great it is to make others miserable. I gave it 1 star because I love fine acting, and they were all terrific.
However, because the environmental points were so so poorly presented by extremists, I found the movie without a soul or meaning.
