Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Natalie M — 19 Feb 2013
Artistically, I can see where this has some merit, because cinematography is often pretty & creative, and I did like, for the most part, the way in which the filmmaker integrated fantasy sequences (things with which I usually have little to no patience).
This does not compensate for the weak (nonexistent?) plot, annoying tendency for Wink to shout all his lines, and generally romanticized and fantastical depiction of extreme poverty. I don't need every film to be a searing critique or realistic depiction of ugly reality, but something about the way the community and individuals were portrayed rubbed me the wrong way.
Ultimately, however, this was just plain boring. 'Nuff said.
