Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Jason S — 21 Feb 2013

Unquestionably one of the most wondrously unique films in recent times, much of Beasts of the Southern Wild's success is thanks to its vivid visual style and its unknown cast delivering exceptional performances, particularly that of youngster Wallis.

While its eccentricities are certainly part of the film's charm, and there is lots to potentially love in this strangely bewildering coming of age tale seen through the eyes of a child, its all too often impossible to avoid feeling alienated amidst the oddly brewed concoction of erratic, fantasy overtones intertwined with jarring plot jumps.
