Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Erik B — 22 Feb 2013
I love how this film never beat me over the head with it's ideas, in the way that many other films of this "art-house" type genre tend to do a lot. I was thinking about the progression of society and education without seeing books pop up randomly, and the audience can see the themes of acceptance (or lack thereof) in fate, nature and relationships without heavy-handed, bludgeoning writing.
But, ultimately, this is all just context in a pretty basic story of a little girl living in the "Bathtub" with her father. And it's one if the best films you are likely to see in a while.
