Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Barry S — 27 Apr 2013
"Beasts of the Southern Wild" is one of those movies you will never forget. In many ways it reminded me of the living conditions in the movie, "District 9." A six year old girl and the rest of her friends and dad are trying to survive under barely survivable conditions in "the Bathtub" an area of backwater swamp on the Louisiana bayou.
Quvenzhane Wallis deserved the title of the youngest ever (9 years old) Oscar nominee. Her total focus on her character is nothing short of amazing. Both she and Dwight Henry who played her father were selected from local residents.
It is the story of triumph of the human spirit without being syrupy sweet and a little girl's unstoppable perception of her world. The "making of" in the special features section is also not to be missed.
