Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Jonathan P — 28 Apr 2013
Beasts of Southern Wild isn't a great story (unless you love the arthouse genre) but it works for two reasons...Benh Zeitin's direction and the Oscar worthy performance of young Quvenzhane Wallis who absolutely steals the show and the audiences hearts.
The entire cast is excellent but it is the young Wallis who gives a performance beyond her years that keeps the story of the yokels from "the bathtub" trying to overcome the effects of a hurricane relevant.
Director Benh Zeitin vision is brought to screen through vivid shots and an authentic feel through the use of shaky cam. Beasts of Southern Wild is a decent film but not worthy of all the accolades it gets unless it comes about from Quvenzhane Wallis' performance.
