A wonderful, gorgeous film about death and the nature of strength. Quvenzhane is spellbinding as Hushpuppy, but it is the scorching imagination of Zeitlin throughout this debut feature that marks it out as one of the best of 2012.
Not without flaws - primarily its pacing, but Beasts is nevertheless a remarkable achievement. Succeeds where Gilliam failed with Tideland.
