Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Bob L — 26 Mar 2013
Truly a moving film, extremely well acted by 5 year old Quvenzhane Wallis. A story of Katrina hitting a poor community living in a southern delta of Louisiana. There's lots of issues here in subtext, but what we see is a culture clash between the haves who think they're helping, and the have nots who think they don't need help that requires dragging them from their homes.
There are some elements of surrealism, but the narration tells us that this whole story is through a childs eyes, and the accumulated facts that she picks up from teachers, shopkeepers, drunken parents etc.
that she accepts as absolute truths. Through surviving storms, nursing her sickening father, and searching for her lost mother, it's also a story of how a little girl builds personal strength and independence.
Brilliant film.
