Review of Beasts of No Nation (2015) by Cian G — 17 Oct 2015
Some pacing issues aside, Beasts of No Nation is a harrowing and hauntingly memorable experience. A post-modernistic synth score underlines the numbness of Agu's journey, and provides the perfect counterpoint to the beautiful, thoughtful cinematography.
Elba delivers a grounded, intense performance as the despicable yet charismatic Commandant, but the real star here is Abraham Atta, whose portrayal of Agu is frighteningly believable. Cary Fukunaga is breaking the Hollywood mould, and is certainly a director to watch over the coming years.
