Review of Beasts of No Nation (2015) by Daniel D — 19 Oct 2015
Riveting story of a boy orphaned by civil war and conscripted into service as a child soldier by a charismatic and sadistic Commandant played by Idris Elba. Abraham Attah plays the young boy and acquits himself well, but Elba is the one you can't take your eyes off of.
Equal parts menacing and hypnotizing, Elba gives a fantastic performance reminiscent of Bill the Butcher from Gangs of New York. Director, Cary Fukunaga, of True Detective fame -the good season- brings the same breathtaking camera work he used on True Detective to this film.
Go to the movies or watch it on Netflix, but see this movie.
