Review of Beasts of No Nation (2015) by Gene T — 10 Jul 2018
This movie blew me away. The story, the acting, the cinematography; everything is top notch. Is it an authentic portrayal? Having had the privilege of growning up in the Europe I couldn't tell you. Does it feel like a authentic portrayal? I certainly never questioned it. Well n almost never. Idris Elba, while doing a phenomenal job may have been a bit to famous for his role and there one or two instances when his accent slips, taking the viewer out of the moment ever so slightly.
That doesn't take away from the fact that this movie feels like a punch to the gut that will stay with you for quite some time. It's bruta.
L, uncompromising and graphic, but never feels like it is unnecessarily so. Netflix puts out a lot of product of questionable quality, but when it occasionally leads to gems like this it's worth it.
