Review of Bears (2014) by David S — 18 Apr 2014
"Bears" is the latest Earth Day concoction from Disney Nature. It follows the story of a mother bear, Skye, and her two young cubs Scout and Amber as they attempt to find food before hibernation in a hostile, mountainous region of Alaska.
Most of the film presents as majestic, cute, and colorful. There are some really adorable moments in the film, as well as some brooding ones when the cubs are threatened by predators. It is amazing how this footage was put together, as it captures the bears in their natural state.
I did find the movie to be excessively formulaic, and the director did not really bring anything new to the animal documentary franchise. The movie felt safe, which isn't all that bad, but it also didn't take the extra step needed to become a CLASSIC film.
All in all, a compelling, adorable movie that pays homage to Earth Day and nature ------------------------------------------- B.
