Review of Bean (1997) by Matthew M — 27 Mar 2011
Bean is a wonderful continuation of the original series, and it succeeds on so many levels where I thought it would fail. It's genuinely hysterical for the duration, and at times it's a moving bit of cinema.
You can engage with Bean here more than you ever could in the series. He has more charm, despite being the immature half-wit he always was. And by the end I was genuinely thrilled Bean had seemingly made a friend for life.
I thought the final scene when he's back in his flat with teddy, and his adapted Whistler's Mother painting rests on the wall at the end of his bed, was really quite sweet. I thought it was a fitting way to end the series there and then.
That was until the god awful Mr. Bean's Holiday came along.
