Review of Baywatch (2017) by Paul B — 07 Nov 2017
Not even Dwayne Johnson can save Baywatch from sinking, which is quite ironic considering he's playing a lifeguard.
Baywatch is a take on the 90's TV show starring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson (both of whom are shoehorned in) and tries to make it a comedy in the same vein as 21 Jump Street. However, Baywatch isn't as self-aware as Jump Street and is part comedy part generic drug-bust movie.
The comedy elements are painfully awful and pretty much every joke falls flat. Despite Dwayne Johnson's charismatic performance, not even he can make the lines he's given work, most of which are "penis jokes". In fact, the only clever line was a play on the word "cellphone" and you can probably guess it. It's cellphone.
Zac Efron is also in this film as a walking torso, and I'm now of the opinion that I'm now going to avoid any film that he stars especially comedies where he is very one note.
The CGI in this film is also terrible, there's a scene featuring a fire rescue where it's so noticeable that it was done using green screen, it makes you wonder where the money went on this film because it wasn't on the script.
It does make me wonder who exactly this film was aimed at, with stars like Efron and Johnson it probably is aimed at the teen audience however they weren't around when the original came out and therefore won't get some of the references.
