Review of Battleship Potemkin (1925) by Matt B — 16 Jun 2007
A true landmark in the medium, with a pioneering editing technique that was both influenced by Hollywood and simultaneously influential to Hollywood. The first half of the film contains some extremely powerful imagery, culminating in the rightfully famous Odessa Steps sequence, perhaps the most famous single sequence in a film.
Eisenstein's approach may be off-putting, especially to modern (and non-Soviet) tastes, but the film is required viewing for anyone seriously interested in the medium.
