Review of Battleship Potemkin (1925) by Justin H — 26 Jan 2010
Look back through film history and one of the most iconic and important films you will see mentioned is Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin. Eisenstein was one of the first directors to realise the importance of visuals as a storytelling tool, as important to the emotional telling of the story as every other element.
He introduced the use of montage and revolutionised the way films were made during the time period, technically and visually. Full of searing images and real emotion, Battleship Potemkin builds tension and fear expertly, leading to the famous and iconic final scenes at the Odessa steps.
The film is also important in an historical context too. A real classic and a milestone in cinema, Battleship Potemkin can be hard work but is well worth your time, espically if you're interested in the evolution of filmmaking.
