Review of Battleship (2012) by Brandon V — 22 Jul 2014
3/5 may seem too high of a rating for the panning this film has gotten, but hear me out. Director Peter Berg takes many pages out of the Michael Bay book to bring you an action/sci-fi thriller that is actually better than you may think.
Berg brings you some typical Michael Bay staples: explosions, spinning cameras, beautiful ladies, warms camera lens, and of course... more explosions. I can only say that 'Battleship' is only loosely based off the board game this film gets its name from.
The main premise is that you have a reckless Navy officer (Taylor Kitsch) and you have a bunch of battleships trying to fend off an alien invasion. These things sound like a recipe for disaster but I must say that there was part of me that just found it enjoyable.
The visuals on the alien ships were convincing enough and the back and forth action between them and the human battleships were fun to watch. What this film did better than Michael Bay was not have tasteless and insensitive humor and the dialogue was not nearly as mind-numbing.
While 'Battleship' certainly doesn't soar very high, it might be a fun time you were not expecting.
