Review of Battlefield Earth (2000) by David F — 07 Aug 2010
Knew I was in trouble when I noticed the introduction to the DVD menu screen had an image the Earth viewed backwards. Absolutely horrible labor of love by John Travolta doesn't exactly lend credence to anything L.
Ron Hubbard wrote. Can only be viewed as camp - whether intentional or not (Travolta's mincing and affected performance leads me to think the former - an effort worthy of the Snydley Whiplash School of Performing Arts).
Seriously, how can we take a film set 1,000 years into the future seriously when the protagonist's names are Johnny, Chrissy and Mickey? The only entertainment value I got was from guessing what happens more often - the number of times Travolta lifts Pepper into the air by the neck, or the number of slow-motion foot chases.
Supporting cast looks like they wandered in from the cast of Xena: Warrior Princess.
