Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Sam C — 27 Apr 2012
Battle Royale is easily one of the most twisted, disturbing movies I have ever seen but it's still a great movie. Battle Royale takes place in a time were society is on the verge of collapsing because teenagers are starting to get rebellious who are causing trouble for adults so the government takes action into their own hands so they start something called Battle Royale.
Battle Royale is were one class of school kids are taken to this Japanese island and are forced to fight to the death. These students have three days to kill each other off and if theirs more than one survivor after the three days they could all die.
Alright I'm only going to mention The Hunger Games once in this review. I loved The Hunger Games series and thought the movie was great and lots of people told me it ripped off Battle Royale and after watching it I can see that they did take some stuff.
The Hunger Games is still a great book series and movie but Battle Royale is were it started. I will also say that this is one of the most brutal movies I have ever seen and if you don't like hardcore action or violence, especially with kids, you will not like this movie what soever.
Even with all the violence in this movie I thought that this movie is great and has a lot to like about it. First off this movie has a sick, gruesome story but it works in this movie. I know that a bunch of teens killing each other sounds horrible but the story is so original and everything in the story worked so well.
Like I said the story is really dark but because of that darkness you actually feel for everyone in this movie. The characters in this movie aren't just some random characters that you don't care because you actually care about the characters in this movie because you get to see their past, and the fact that their in 9th grade makes you feel for them as well.
The action in this movie is very brutal and intense and because it's teenagers causing all this violence you might think it's a bit to much but it's actually pretty entertaining. I know that makes me sound like a complete dick but it's an action movie and it's pretty entertaining.
As for the acting in this movie it's also pretty damn good. Tatsuya Fujiwara is absolutely great in this movie and he was perfect for his character and actually made me feel for him in this movie along with Aki Maeda.
Taro Yamamoto is great in this movie as well and I thought that his character was so well done and he just played the role perfectly. Another noticeable performance in this movie is from Takeshi Kitano whose character was really dark and made that character come to life and even strikes fear into you.
Overall Battle Royale is a great movie but is certainly not for everyone.
