Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Brad D — 03 Nov 2012
Take one look at the "transfer students" that play in these games and one should find it hard to believe that The Hunger Games had never seen this film before. But blatant thievery aside, this film is able to overcome a low budget and cheesy dialogue through relentless violence and a provocative metaphor of life for younger generations.
Coupling fear, disbelief and utter savagery all in means fully convincing for a bunch of high school students, this one does the unthinkable...merges the art house with the snuff film and comes out with something to say.
Those who left The Hunger Games feeling unfulfilled, or refuse to watch the latest Harry Potter for teens would do well to discover this one.
