Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Bryant D — 21 Dec 2012
While I didn't watch the 3D version of the film, I've known of this film of some time and read quite a bit regarding it. The film is very intense and unique, but the main thing I could not understand is how a large portion of the geek community views 'The Hunger Games' as a rip-off of this film.
One explores the loss/retention of one's humanity in a kill-or-be-killed situation, the other is an examination of the long lasting effects of war on a society. To say that either is "extremely similar" is to take a very simplistic view of both stories and is the same as saying that "Predator" and "Alien" are exactly the same because the have a plot involving extra-terrestrials killing off human victimes.
