Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Peter N — 23 Dec 2012
Due to what came out later, there will always be inevitable comparisons to Hunger Games. I feel like I do a fairly good job of discerning between the two. What makes Battle Royale entertaining is its effectiveness at portraying a frightening futuristic world without being farfetched or unrealistic.
There are some really tense scenes as well. The problem I have is the fact that Asian movies are straight up weird. I'm sorry, but they just can't seem to make a straightforward film. I guess something like this is supposed to be kind of weird, but the ending just didn't make sense to me.
I feel like they took the easy way out by refusing to explain certain things. Also kind of weird that all the students refused to admit their crushes on other students until they were put in this situation.
