Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Chinmai R — 16 Nov 2013
Preceding The Hunger Games by more than eight years, Battle Royale sets the standards for this genre. Morally unsuitable and beautiful brutality describes how each year a Japanese 9th grade class is randomly selected by the government, transported to an island, equipped with a weapon and forced to fight each other for survival.
The stakes are elevated with exploding neck collars worn by each kid forcing them to abide by the rules. Eerie performance by Takeski Kitano the class teacher. Kill or be killed. Over 40 to start, there can only be one survivor.
