Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Joe M — 03 Sep 2013
A classroom of teenagers gets placed on an island, and has 3 days to fight to the death. For the purpose of controlling the outrageous youth in Japan. This film has a lot of interesting moments, but some weird ones and a lot of things that just don't make sense.
The beginning starts off all confusing, and ends all confusing, and why their class was chosen and how that stops chaos and riots from youth is confusing. What I liked about this film is that there were no fight scenes it was just action and realistic style of death and kills.
There were a lot good moments of friendship, love and betrayal. I'm sure there are some cultural differences I missed as well. They also spent just enough time on character development, which really helped understand the characters motivation.
I had no idea why the one teacher was obsessed with the girl, and painted that weird picture. Overall if you like foreign films, or Japanese culture it is worth a watch. However, if you are watching it because you are a hunger games fan, then I would avoid this film, unless you just like the violence.
