Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Scott R — 08 Jan 2013
The original Hunger Games, except not for entertainment but as political legislation to make youth respect their elders. I enjoyed that premise since the kids did not know about it, but it still seems faulty since they did not punish them all, only a class a year. Had it been for entertainment then it would have had the necessary effect to scare the kids into submission.
I really enjoyed the "Happy Fun Time" introductory video to the BR, it was a nice Japanese touch to the morbidity. The violence was a little silly at times, and I had a hard time believing that people had that kind of killing instinct in them, but then again I do not know Japan well. Once again, this film also made me want to visit Japan. They have a fascinating culture.
