Review of Battle of the Bulge (1965) by Daniel K — 26 Jan 2008
This film (as it is written at least) has absolutely no business being 170 minutes. The character development is certainly lacking in many respects, the pacing is off, and the concentration on certain not particularly interesting battles and historical elements is harmful to the overall effectiveness of the film.
Comparing this to a Ford or Lean military picture or a more recent incarnation from Spielberg or HBO is laughable. It doesn't even hold up next to similar period pieces like The Great Escape and The Dirty Dozen.
There's so much unfocused and unneccessary buildup to the final battle that one may end up losing interest.
