Review of Battle of Britain (1969) by Phil C — 10 Nov 2007
One of the films I first saw when I was a kid and it made such an impact. I still regularly watch it now because it reminds me how much we owe our grandparents. And after all us brits love it when the underdog beats the bully dont we? The dogfight sequence set to music is a classic piece of cinematography in my opinion and the scene where the pilots chute doesnt open just illustrates the horror of conflict and the fine line between life and death thes e pilots trod.
The fact that I grew up in a town that had a battle of Britain airfield ( RAF Hornchurch) makes it all the more special for me. Very accurate historically and the fact that the vast majority of the aeroplanes we see were real ( not CGI generated, directors please take note) adds to the authenticity.
Yes there are stereotypes and its difficult to tell who the characters are sometimes ( masks and googles tend to hide features very well) but I enjoy this film very much. One question though, how come so many late 1960's haircuts ( especially the womens) made it into a film set in 1940?
