A quintessential war film.
A stellar cast - including Robert Shaw, Christopher Plummer, Kenneth More, Laurence Olivier, Susannah York, and Ian McShane, although the dialogue is fairly stilted...
All sequences involving the aircraft are quite stunning - no CGI fakery here (although a certain amount of minatures can be discerned). Real Hurricanes and Spitfires, fake Stukas (models), and Spanish-built Heinkels and Messeerchmitts - these sequences are enough to bring tears to the eyes of any aviation enthusiast!
The inter-personal scenes are somewhat laboured (especially between Christopher Plummer and Susannah York), but then they're not intended to be the film's focal point...
