Review of Battle in Heaven (2005) by Richard C — 13 Mar 2010
It will definitely not appeal to the masses - I think it was designed that way. It's definitely art house but it's hard to categorize after that. Some sort of genre breaker for drama and erotica which turns into philosophical anti-erotica.
You can tell I liked it - there's a certain otherworldy vibe to it that the camera captures. I also like experiencing new visions and storytelling, this film achieves that by including purposefully bad acting in a serious scenario; a film with this sort of professional cinematography and direction is obviously saying something with this.
In between some of the nasty X-rated scenes you can still find some heavenly shots and watchable strangeness. I can't really make sense of what happens in the end but I like it all the same - mysteriousness is good.
