Review of Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) by Antony A — 14 Apr 2008
The weakest film of the 5...not so much because of the script - but moreso because there wasn't enough money to make its necessity for a massive battle realised. Maybe a bit of CGI magic could beef things up.
The script was fine, but yes, the continuity holes were even larger, with all apes now being able to speak and the orangutans even contemplate faster-than-light-travel, within the space of a few decades after hopping out of trees.
This film seriously should have been set at least, a couple hundred of years after 'Conquest'. The prospect of a better future and an avoidance of the final nuke in 3950-something is successfully hinted in the seperate Virgil, Mendez, and Lawgiver scenes.
The Aldo-Cornelius-Caesar storyline was poignant, with MacDonald's declaration near its conclusion a defining moment.
