Review of Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) by Clay B — 07 May 2011
The final Planet of the Apes movie (in the original series) almost feels like a grindhouse movie at points because of the low budget and themes/styles of the movie. Not much was put into this film and at points it shows it.
The basic plot structure doesn't make sense in context with the rest of the series (the original writer was let go and new writers were brought in to give a new direction to the series). If the movie had been set 200 years after the previous one, it might have worked a bit better (and Roddy McDowall had played a descendant of Caesar).
It was stated in the first movie that the apes couldn't gain the power of speech but these apes are pretty fluent after grunting through the Conquest. The final "Battle" gets a bit old and is anticlimatic especially since no sequels were made (though the TV series carried on some of the themes).
