Review of Batman: Year One (2011) by Tom R — 12 Jul 2012
(4 Stars) Batman: Year One is another great Batman animated film that's good enough for a theatrical release, along with the superb Mask of the Phantasm, Subzero, Return of the Joker, and Under the Red Hood.
My only real complaint is that it's too short... a sparse 64 minutes. We've been told the origin of Batman numerous times, but Year One is different because this is as much Commissioner Gordon's story as it is Bruce Wayne's.
This is extra cool if you're a fan of Bryan Cranston, who plays the no-nonsense good cop in a corrupt Gotham. It's more violent and adult than the Animated Series (wait til you find out what Catwoman does in her free time) and you can definitely feel Frank Miller's influence, so it's not for everyone.
But Batman: Year One is still a great film that most Batfans will enjoy.
