Review of Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) by Joe O — 08 Sep 2010
About as good as a 'direct-to-DVD' animated movie can be. It seems like the reviews are somewhat split on this flick. Critics either love it or hate it with no in between. One critic called it "the best DC animated film to date'.
Now that...that's pushing it. I guess I'm in the in between, because "Mask of the Phantasm" still holds that title. I did really enjoy "Under the Red Hood" it was fantastic, and It will be part of my big nerdy collection someday, but it doesn't touch the masterpiece that is "Mask of the Phantasm".
Up until 'The Dark Knight" hit theaters, MotP was not only the best direct to video DC film, but also the best DC film period (In my opinion). "Under the Red Hood" was very, very good however.
It's really a gift to true Batman geeks. It combines three classic Batman stories, A Death in the Family, which is the story of the Death of Jason Todd. The Killing Joke, which is the story of the Origin of the Joker, and it vaguely evokes 'Hush' which is the story of a friend of Bruce Wayne who has seemingly come back from the dead to become an apparent masked trench coat wearing fake vigilante murderer.
As I said a gift to Batman nerds, and it was very well done, with a new story and tremendous artistic style animation and great voiceover work to boot. Under the Red Hood is definitely worth checking out for anyone who likes a good superhero flick and doesn't mind cartoons.
(Not for children though, this one is all about drugs and murder) and to all my fellow Batman geeks out there, this one gets my seal of approval. ;).
