Review of Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) by Michael C — 03 Jun 2011
Ranking among my favorites of the DC animated movies, "Under the Red Hood" adapts the comic storyline of the same name that brought back the long-thought deceased Jason Todd, the second adolescent youth to don the Robin moniker.
The story is a compelling one, as it preys on one of Batman's greatest regrets while crafting a villain whose ethos has some validity beyond Batman's own code. The voice acting is really great in this; as much as I think Kevin Conroy is the only person who should voice an animated Batman, Bruce Greenwood does well, and John DiMaggio's take on Joker was a little bit more realistic and chilling in its own way.
Judd Winick's adaptation of his own comic story condensed the story well for animation and didn't butcher it to bad, choosing to retain most of the central elements of the story. The DC animated movies (for the most part) have succeeded by staying reasonably well to the source material.
This is a great example of that loyalty and I am hoping that continues.
