Review of Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) by Gabriel C — 17 Jul 2012
My favorite of the "standalone" Batman animated features, "Under the Red Hood" is that nice blend of action, comedic relief, drama, and psychology that makes for a quality Batman story.
The writing, the plot, the pacing, the storytelling...it's all done so well. On par with Nolan's films, even. The score seems heavily inspired by Nolan's batverse, too; all for the better.
The few hiccups this film has are no different than that of any other Batman story; certain circumstances, at certain times, feel all too convenient. And the animation. It's alright; just bland. Neither stylized enough to leave a lasting impression (think "Gotham Knight") nor drawn uniquely enough to "create its own universe" (think the 90s animated series), the art is merely a device used to tell the story of Batman and the Red Hood.
With a plot as strong as "Under the Red Hood," it's barely noticeable unless you're specifically critiquing it. The story will suck in casual bat-fans and supermegaultra hardcore bat-fans alike.
