Review of Batman: The Killing Joke (2016) by Dariel A — 24 Jul 2016
I enjoyed this adaptation of the 1988 graphic novel by Alan Moore. The film not only goes over the events of the novel, but it also touches on some prior events leading into the main story of the film especially in regard to Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl (Tara Strong).
The film in a nutshell is about the Joker (Mark Hamill) escaping Arkham Asylum and exacting a very sick plot involving Barbara her father Commissioner Gordon (Ray Wise) and of course Batman (Kevin Conroy).
That's all I'll say about the plot because saying anymore would ruin it for anyone that hasn't read the novel on which it's based. I enjoyed the animation and the overall story. I did find the slight little prequel parts a bit over the top especially involving Barbara and Batman, but I get that the director was trying to spice it up a bit and have the audience feeling more emotional about the certain events that eventually happen.
This still won't be for everyone. The ending might even be super confusing for anyone that hasn't read the book, or in this matter has never read a Batman comic. Regardless, DC Animated fans and fans of the source material should definitely check this out!
