Review of Batman: The Killing Joke (2016) by Chris U — 28 Jul 2016
Batman: The Killing Joke is by far the most dark and sexual animated feature from DC ever. There are moments of sheer brilliance in the story through dialogue from both The Joker and Batman that really shows their need for each other.
Also detailing how the Joker becomes the Joker is the absolute high point of the story, although a little cliche I must say. BUT for every moment of brilliance we have 6 of "what the hell?" "seriously?!" and "why?" Seeing an animated naked kidnapped Jim Gordon is not something that really makes me go "wow, so unique," it just mostly made me confused.
Also a certain sex scene in the film also made people actually get up and leave the theater I was in. These examples show new ideas and places to take an old story but the question shouldn't have been could we so much as it should have been, should we.
Lastly, Mark Hammil and Kevin Conroy return as The Joker and Batman respectively and they both bring these animated characters truly to life once again. Batman is even more on edge and distraught that we have ever seen him and this is by far the darkest iteration of The Joker yet.
So in summary, this movie is a take it or leave it in my book. There are moments I think any fan of Batman and The Joker need to see and there are others that will scar a child for life.
