Review of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 (2013) by Dan F — 04 Mar 2014
Weller's Batman is Powers Boothe on steroids, meeting his appearance accurately. The film sticks true to its source, right down to Reagan as president instructing a seemingly immortal Superman compromised by warped political motive instructing his good intentions (alluding to some dark revelations about the fates of other JLA members).
Joker is played as suave and calm, a deceptively brutal and sadistic maniac rather than the blatant insanity of other renditions. An early sequence is brutal, cruel and borderline terrifying; well beyond the extremes open to live action films.
The bar for straight to DVD entertainment has been raised, as has the standard for DC animation, and DC adaptations- theatrically released or otherwise. Magnificent entertainment, and a truly satisfying film in its own right.
Epic. This is the Batman fans want to see. Well done DC, you nailed it this time!
