Review of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (2012) by Kevin R — 10 Sep 2013
You're never finished with me.
Batman has been retired for ten years. During his retirement a group of psychopaths known as the mutants rise in the bowels of Gotham. They eventually rise to power and slowly start taking over the city. Batman will need to return from retirement if there is any hope of Gotham surviving the hostile takeover.
"Harvey Dent meet Harvey Dent. Both sides match.".
Jay Oliva, director of The Invincible Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns 2, and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, delivers Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1. This is actually my second all time favorite Batman plot (after only the Killing Joke). The story, by the legend, Frank Miller, is awesome and both gritty and action packed. The characters are depicted perfectly and the animation is beautiful.
"This isn't a mud hole, it's an operating table...and I'm the surgeon.".
I have been a huge fan of the animated DC pictures lately and it took me way too long to see this. I have read the Frank Miller masterpiece and was excited to see how this played out on the screen; and I will say, it played out perfectly. The appropriate grit was on display throughout the film and the animation style was brilliant (as was the dialogue). This is a must have for your DVD collection if you are a fan of comic book animated films.
"Commissioner Gordan was shot and killed.".
