Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Adam O — 19 Jan 2013
This film is a carnival surprises and is fun from beginning to end. Many comic book readers would agree that Batman Returns is unorthodox with respect to the character of the Penguin. The Penguin in the comics is not insane; rather, he is an affluent crime boss who certainly does not appear to be mentally ill. Burton's penguin clearly has loose wiring but that is what makes this film psychologically rich. DeVito was masterfully casted as the Penguin. To this day, I cannot think of anyone who would suit that role better. As in the first film, I found the villain to greatly overshadow Batman. I just do not think Michael Keaton was a good selection to play Batman.
Aside from the Penguin, my favourite aspect of the film was the dark atmosphere Burton created. Only Burton can effectively mix Halloween with Christmas and make it work. The overall look of the film was gorgeous with great costume design, makeup art and the use of dark colours on set. Danny Elfman also did an outstanding job composing the soundtrack for this film.
Even if you are not a Batman fan, this is still a great film to see!
