Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Loyal D — 16 Jan 2015
Like the previous Burton Batman film, I love the vision they have of Bruce Wayne/Batman, with an unexpectedly on par portrayal from Michael Keaton, but the villains are a little bit iffier. This Penguin and Catwoman are about as far from their comic book origins as you could get, and really only share the animal themes of their counterparts but none of the personality or origins.
Danny DeVito as the Penguin is about the best casting you could do, but I don't like their vision of him, and he's just plain gross to watch. Also, his evil plot makes very little sense. The whole movie's just plain weird, and if you resist it, you'll probably hate it.
I was halfway there, so I just found it mostly okay. As a wacky yet perpetually dark Burton film, it's not bad. As an accurate portrayal of the Dark Knight, it's not very good. I love Batman, but I love Burton too, so my feelings are split.
Approach it with an open mind.
