The first and the last time will a director be given total freedom on a mainstream superhero movie. When you try to rationalize Batman, you fail from the start and snap the already stretched thin suspension of disbelief.
Burton gets it, these people aren't normal, a grow man dressing up as a bat to fight crime has to have a screw loose or two.
