Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Shaun B — 22 Feb 2015
As a kid the sequel wasn't as good as the original but it still entertained. As I revisit this the tables have turned and this is one of those rarities of Hollywood where the sequel is actually better than the original.
Tim Burton returns with a vengeance bringing us into a darker Gotham City with the solid Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman (a good choice). Danny DeVito nearly steals the show as The Penguin and while I much prefer Kim Basinger over Michelle Pfeiffer it's still a good casting choice.
Christopher Walken is an added bonus who lives up to his billing. It's also a great "family" style film that leans more heavily on sexuality for the adults to grasp while still leaving in the more violent explosions for the tweens and younger.
It's a really solid movie for pure entertainment's sake. Only way you don't like this is if you do not enjoy Tim Burton's style to filmmaking and/or you're a Nazi sympathizer.
