Review of Batman Returns (1992) by Jay L — 12 Aug 2012
"The Bat, The Cat And The Penguin.".
The sequel to the 1989 smash hit Batman, Batman Returns is just as good, if not better than the Award Winning original. Director Tim Burton (Big Fish, Nighmare Before Christmas) is back in the Directors chair in this truly elaborate, highly stylish and much darker sequel. Burton's trademark style is ever present throughout the film, its complete with highly unusual characters, eye popping set design, elaborate costume and make up effects and unforgettable action sequences. The first two Batman films were the absolute best and were in the best interest of the franchise at that time, but after this film, the Batman saga started to get rather ridiculous and then just plain terrible (yeah im talking to u Joel Schhmaker). Batman Returns is one of the more odd and darker toned Batman films, that was until Christopher Nolan sand blasted his way into the franchise and came through with a seriously extraordinarily incredible reboot for everything Batman. At the time, Burtons signature style was perfect for the saga, but as its aged, in my humble opinion, these films are quute comical in nature, that is to say that these films havent aged quite well. With that being said, this is still a remarkable action film, as well as a huge staple for the DC comics universe. Another two thumbs up for Tim Burton and company.
Michael Keaten returns as the Batman/Bruce Wayne and he does another great job throughout. Michelle Pheiffer paves her way into the franchise with her decent performance as the Catwoman. Danny Devito gives a comical, but ultimately bearabke villainous performance as the deranged and disfigured Penguin. Christopher Walken is fantastic as he always is. Great acting, great story, awesome film.
