Review of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (2018) by Jon C — 07 Feb 2018
Another riveting entry in the long line of DC animated works.
The approach here involves putting Batman in the Victorian Era facing off against Jack the Ripper.
This increases the tensions for the endangered townsfolk knowing there are two individuals prowling the streets.
It's like they can't trust either of them despite what Batman's doing to try and protect Gotham.
Once more each of these characters are in alternate positions; Selina Kyle is a showgirl, Poison Ivy is a dancer, Barbara Gordon is Jim Gordon's wife, and Hugo Strange is a certified surgeon.
Selina is one of the many suffragettes fighting to give the weak and powerless a voice since no one else can.
This version of Jack the Ripper has a richer backstory and we understand better why he commits these haneous acts.
Dark, gothic, fun steampunk elements and great commentary about what infects our societies from outside and within.
What is the best way to liberate citizens and end corruption?
Super short but slickly animated, amazing acting voicework from a talented cast, and still makes Batman classic yet modern simultaneously.
